Computer Networking – Elements and Components

Friday, January 1st, 2010

When studying computer networks, one must consider the main elements that will compromise the computer network. The main elements that must be considered will be presented below:

1. Message: the message is a generic term that scribes the data to be transmitted. It can be email, webpage, user call, instant message, or any other forms. The message is generated by the end user that needs to make the transmission. This message will be fed to the network later.

Generally, the message is generated using software installed on computer. For example, if the message is email, it will be generated by email programs such as outlook. Also if the message is a web page request, it will be generated by a browser such as internet explorer. It can also be generated by a chatting program is it represents a call by the user.

2. Medium: the medium is the transmission path over which the data will be transmitted. Is is used to connect the end user with the network device or to connect the network devices with each other.

Many types exist for the medium. Mainly it can be wired or wireless medium. The wired medium can be copper or optical fibers. The copper is subdivided into coaxial cables and twisted pairs. The copper wires carry data as electrical pulses while the optical fiber carry data as light pulses. The wireless medium carries data as electromagnetic waves. Each of the above mediums has its own specifications and used according to the application.

3. Devices: there are two basic types of devices in the network: end user devices and network devices. The end user device is considered to be the source of the message. It can be a client computer or an IP phone. The function of the end user device is to send the data to the network.

On the other hand, the network devices are used along with the medium to forward the data generated by the end user device. They are located in between the end user devices and connected between them through the cables.

The main function of the computer network devices is to forward the data to the correct destination based on the address that is send along with the data. The two main devices that accomplish this are the routers and the switches. The router forwards the data according to the IP address while the switch forwards the data according to the MAC address inside the data frame.

4. Rules: the rules are the protocols that used between the end user devices that organize the communication. The two popular protocols are the IP protocol and the TCP protocol. When the end user needs to send the data, it runs a conversation first with the other device according to a set of rules that prepares for the transmission. Each network uses its own protocols set up by the administrator of the network to manage the operations inside the network. Note that this element is a software element and is set up by software programs

Dual Monitor

Sunday, December 20th, 2009

Computers today have become inherently cheaper for most people because we are living in an extremely digital world. Moreover, they are more affordable these days because computer monitors are becoming cheaper as well. This also includes the video hardware that drives the computer unit as a whole.

Getting the right kind of dual monitor that works correctly seems to be quite difficult. Most of the time, It is just a matter of incorporating another separate video card monitor and rebooting the computer to make it work. Sometimes, there will be a need to incorporate other means such as cyber modifications to operate them effectively and get computer tasks done more efficiently.

The method being applied is pretty much the same regardless of the version of Windows being used. First and for most, it is necessary to make sure that the system you are using is working correctly. Afterwards, you can boot the computer into a safe mode and correctly approve of whether you only use one video adapter and the Device Manager that is being showed by the monitor. If there are more than one video adapter being used, It is necessary to exclude all the extras.

Other people can have one of those computers having two screens in one computer unit. This is commonly seen in places where loads of office work is done. It is no surprise that those with busy lifestyles consider thinking about having these as well. Basically, there are two screens that you can incorporate into one computer unit. One of the factors that you have to consider to be able to make this possible is to have a monitor video card. This card will tell your computer unit that there will be a need of two computer screens instead of just one. This type of set up will never be made possible without the dual monitor video card’s help.

One of the things that you need to inspect is the computer’s vacant slot that will enable these video cards to be installed. This is depended upon how old your computer is. Generally, newer versions of these units have more slots available. The internet has loads of information that you can check out to see what these available slots are like. You can even refer to your computer manual to see the attributes your computer unit possesses that you can take advantage of. If the manual does not contain the information you need, it will be inconvenient for you knowing you have to spend a lot of money trying to fit this to your computer for it to function properly.

It is more advisable to have a new computer unit with the latest version. You can pick ones that have extra slots for dual monitor video cards. This alternative is becoming more and more popular and some business firms that are all about manufacturing computers are making this as a new standard so it is necessary to read and make some verifications of fine print and do some assessments. Sometimes, there will be a slot available for a card but there will be a need to buy a card after purchasing your computer unit. These are available at any electronics or computer stores needless to say, online, as well.
